The Sophisticated Woman

The Sophisticated Woman follows a mother and daughter as they perform their intimate morning routines, and ultimately create their perfect, power suit looks.

Director Statement

The Sophisticated Woman is inspired by the connection one holds with clothing and the confidence that can be found in our everyday garments. In today’s media, we often find that men are portrayed with immense suave and sophistication in their tastefully curated apartments and perfectly tailored suits. Through this film, I wanted to create a space in which women can be the same, without sacrificing their femininity or comfort. Following the morning routine of a mother and a daughter, the film focuses on the details that make one’s perfect, power suit while also highlighting the differences in generational styles. As they go through the universal ritual of getting ready for their day, both mother and daughter change from women who just got out of bed into powerful sophisticated individuals, transfigured in a suit.

Mona Kubota-Johnson

Growing up with a love for fashion, Mona knew she had to work with clothing in any way she could. After an early start of working in theatre costuming in NYC, she went to USC’s School of Cinematic Arts to pursue a degree in film studies where she explored the crossovers between fashion and film. In the past few years, Mona has worked in development and production assisting for documentary film and online media companies such as Kyra TV and Hard Working Movies. Mona is very excited to have her directorial debut on The Sophisticated Woman; a project that embodies her interests in the two art forms she loves most.
